South African-based chain Nando’s PERi-PERi will open its doors in Oak Park on April 30. The world-renowned restaurant will bring a mix of South African spices and Portuguese-style cuisine to the community.
PERi-PERi, also known as African Bird’s Eye Chili, is one of the popular spices used in the restaurant’s dishes. CEO of Nando’s PERi-PER USA, Burton Heiss, said: “We marinate our chicken in PERi-PERi for at least 24 hours, so the flavor goes right through to the bone.” From there, the chicken is flame-grilled and basted with PERi-PERi sauce.
The dining area of Nando’s PERi-PERi will seat 150 guests with the addition of a large outdoor patio. Original works of South African art will grace the walls of the restaurant as a constant reminder of where the restaurant came from. Other unique features include exposed coffered ceilings, reclaimed Chicago brick designs, and bright African patterned fabrics.
Aside from Nando’s PERi-PERi being known for their famous spicy flame-grilled chicken, the restaurant also believes in giving back to their communities. From Saturday, April 30 to Sunday, May 1, Nando’s PERi-PERi is pledging to give 100% of all sales to OPRF High School. “As our neighbors, the Oak Park and River Forest High School is helping local students discover their potential and prepare for college,” said Heiss.
Nando has raised more than $75,000 for Chicago area schools and non-profits throughout their community efforts at their other five locations. Last month, Nando drew in more than $21,000 for programs at Naperville North and Naperville Central High Schools.
