Police organize fundraiser to benefit wounded Oak Park officer

The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) will host the “Pistol Shoot and Dinner Fundraiser” on Sun. Aug. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. to raise money for the family of John Patterson, a 25-year veteran of the Oak Park Police Department who was shot twice last summer during an attempted robbery.

The fundraiser will take place at the VFW Post 2801, 39 E. St. Charles Rd., Villa Park. Tickets for the competitive pistol shoot are $10. Participants interested in the shoot are required to provide their own firearms, ammunition, and be able to show proof of a valid FOID card. Tickets for the dinner are $30; both sets of tickets will be available for purchase at the door.

Patterson was shot twice during the early morning hours of May 4, 2015, near his home on Chicago’s South Side. The off-duty officer was on his way to begin his shift with the Oak Park Police Department when two male suspects, 17 and 18-years old, tried to rob him. Once the suspects realized he had a gun, they shot at Patterson, hitting him in the arm and leg.

“John has had a long and difficult recovery,” said FOP Lodge # 8 President James Hawkinson in a statement. “The Village of Oak Park stopped paying him on May 1, 2016, because he has used up all of his sick and vacation time to recover from what is officially considered by them to be an off-duty incident. We hope the fundraiser will help John through these difficult times.”

Although he was cleared to return to work by his physician on May 27, the village has not allowed Patterson to return to duty, requiring him to undergo additional tests that would not be covered by the police department, according to a news release from the FOP.

The Oak Park Police Department Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 8 and VFW Post 2801 will be donating food for the dinner. All of the proceeds from the event will be given to the Patterson family, according to the new release.
