The much anticipated Oak Park and River Forest Museum will celebrate its grand opening Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As a part of the ceremony, guests should expect a ribbon-cutting ceremony, refreshments, family-friendly fun, and tours of the museum.

An exhibit titled “From the Home Front to the Battle Front: Oak Park, River Forest and World War I” encapsulates the centennial of the United States entering into the First World War, and more specifically the impact the communities of Oak Park and River Forest had in the war. Other feature points of the museum include historical artifacts such as the bicycle of village historian Philander Barclay, who collected photographs of Oak and River Forest from the 1880s to 1902.

History buffs might recognize the Lake Street location as a firehouse that was utilized by the village from 1898-1916. The facility has been updated in recent years with a restored interior and HVAC system, and will now serve as the home for the new museum dedicated to preserving the history of the OPRF communities.

From 2 to 4 p.m., the Oak Park Fire Department will park a fire truck in the front of the building for children to explore. Families will also be able to play with old-fashioned games and toys, according to a press release from the Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest.

Admission is $5 for Oak Park or River Forest residents with an ID, $7 for adults who live outside of OPRF, $3 for students age 7 to college, and free for children under 7.

The museum is located at 129 Lake St. in Oak Park on the southeast corner of Lake and Lombard. Museum operating hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The museum is closed Sunday through Tuesday. For group tours, call 708-848-6755.
