It seems that every New Years Day attracts a new crowd of gym-goers looking to shed some of that holiday weight and improve their overall health. December and January, statistically, will see some of the highest spikes in gym memberships due to this newfound motivation. Setting fitness goals and investing in your health is always a great way to kick off the new year, and Oak Park is providing some great options for doing so.

If you’re looking for a true fitness challenge this new year, look no further than Orangetheory Fitness, located at 7121 W. North Ave. Orangetheory Fitness is featuring a six-week weight loss challenge, offering a $2,500 prize split between the male and female winners. Participants are encouraged to workout at least three times a week.

The Barre Code, located at 1040 Lake St., features high-intensity cardio and kickboxing classes, if you’re looking to switch-up your workout routine. Barre Code is also offering a one-week special. For $20.16, all newcomers have the opportunity to attend their special workout programs for seven days. A full year membership at Barre Code will run you about $1,000.

Those who are looking for a more basic and cost-effective fitness option, the Park District of Oak Park’s fitness center at 21 Lake St. is featuring a $60 Groupon special all of January. Purchase a membership this month, and you get February at no additional cost. The fitness center offers more than 50 classes each week, including kettle classes, interval training, and yoga, as well as classes for adults 50-years-old and older.

Some more high-end options in Oak Park include FFC Oak Park at 1114 Lake St. and Evolution Fitness Club at 711 Madison St. These clubs will feature everything from rock climbing walls, tanning beds, pools, spa treatments, childcare centers and much more.

According to the federal government guidelines, it is recommended that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity to 75 minutes of high-intensity aerobic exercise a week, and should strength-train all the major muscle groups twice a week. Don’t become the “resolutioner” that says “well, there’s always next year.” Take advantage of Oak Park’s wonderful fitness options this winter, and get yourself on the right track for 2016.
