Village officials organized a groundbreaking ceremony at Roosevelt Rd. and Home Ave. last week, the location for Alcuin Montessori School’s new facility scheduled to open April 2019.
The school currently has a main campus at 324 N. Oak Park Ave. and a middle school campus at 124 N. Kenilworth Ave. Both buildings will remain open until construction on the new location is complete.
Enrollment has been steady for the school which ultimately drove the decision to move to an all-encompassing facility.
“To be finding and expanding into our permanent home is a big moment for us,” said Executive Director Gina Gleason in an interview with the Pioneer Press. “It secures our future.”
Alcuin Montessori was founded in 1961, three years after Whitby School in Greenwich, Conn., the first-ever Montessori educational institution to open its doors in the United States.
Alcuin Montessori currently has 141 students enrolled Pre-K through 8th grade. Alcuin Montessori’s mission is to inspire a lifelong commitment to intellectual exploration and personal excellence by providing an educational community founded on academics, independent thought and individual development, according to GreatSchools.org.
Parents of students currently enrolled at the school have mostly positive things to say about the institution.
“Montessori and Alcuin were the right choice for our children, we have been very pleased with our decision, as have our children,” said one Oak Park parent.
