Students from William H. Hatch Elementary in Oak Park donated 154 pairs of shoes to Chicago-based charity, Share Your Soles. The event took place on March 8 and was coordinated by the “Hatch Green Team,” an environment-friendly student club interested in making the planet and school greener and cleaner.
Principal of Hatch Elementary, Sarah Mendez, talked about the important lessons their students would learn from the event. “Not only does this help the environment, but it teaches our children to be thoughtful of what happens to items they no longer need and how to reuse and repurpose things. It’s been so exciting to see our shoe collection bin overflowing for the past few weeks. This is a great way for the students to help others and learn about people in other parts of the world.”
Share Your Soles was established in 1999 and is led by Executive Director Mona Purdy. The charity is dedicated to sharing gently worn and new shoes to those in greatest need. Donated shoes are not only distributed throughout the United States but worldwide as well. Share Your Soles is currently sending shoes to locations in Central and South America, such as Mexico, Haiti, and Nicaragua.
