This Weekend Around Oak Park

You’re going to want to keep your warmest clothes handy over the weekend even though it felt like spring yesterday with that evening rain. The next couple days are going to be windy and cold, aka the deadliest one-two punch since Jordan & Pippen, Mario & Luigi, milk & cookies, baseball & Cracker Jacks, credit cards & debt- should I go on?

We will be spending part of our Saturday hanging out with Brittany and Spencer McCreary from Veltway Sessions, a dynamic duo in their own right, so look for that Know Your Neighbors piece in the coming days. Until then, here are a few ideas to help you make the most of a random weekend Around Oak Park in the middle of January.

Bar Spotlight – Sláinte on Madison St.
Sláinte, 7505 Madison Street, Forest Park, has some of the best prices of any bar in the area. We highly recommend this place if you are trying to enjoy the NFL Playoffs or Bulls and Blackhawks games over the weekend without hurting your wallet. It’s an added bonus if you appreciate the ambiance of a traditional Irish pub. Cheers, or should I say “Sláinte.”

Restaurant Spotlight – Munch on Marion St.
Munch, located at 104 N. Marion Street, Oak Park, is known for its wide selection of gluten-free and vegetarian options. The restaurant is open for brunch, lunch, and dinner until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday but closes at 4 p.m. on Sunday. First timers should try the Comfort Breakfast for brunch or the “Beefy” Tostada Plate for lunch/dinner, or the Vegan Lasagna. Last two points to remember before heading to Munch- the place is BYOB and they only accept cash. There is an ATM on-site if you need it.

No Way I’m Leaving the House – What’s on Netflix?
If you want to avoid the cold or spending money, there’s nothing wrong with finding something on Netflix. If movies are your thing, I noticed they have Caddyshack, Wedding Crashers, Batman Begins, The Godfather Trilogy, Shawshank Redemption, The Conjuring, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Bring It On, and Boss Baby to name a few. Plenty of different genres there and you’re bound to find something else if those don’t sound appealing. If shows are your thing, you can watch the new season of Black Mirror; Ozark is really good; Stranger Things is always awesome. And Big Mouth is an insanely raunchy animated comedy that will leave you shaking your head while not being able to help but laugh.

Extending the Weekend – Fenwick vs Simeon on MLK Day
If you happen to have Monday off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Fenwick Boys Basketball team is playing at home against top-ranked Simeon at 3:45 p.m. This is the most important game for the Friars yet this year as a win can help them move up in the rankings and instantly put them in the discussion to win the Illinois state title. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 708-386-0127 (limit four per caller). There will be no ticket sales on Monday so it is best to get them as soon as you can before they sell out. Fenwick High School is located at 505 Washington Boulevard, Oak Park.
