How is your March Madness bracket looking after day one? Over the years, it’s become common for mine to have more holes in it than the plot line of one of the Matrix movies, but I only had one incorrect pick yesterday- Seton Hall. I was fortunate enough to call the major upsets including Little Rock over Purdue and Yale over Baylor. I attribute this luck to my namesake’s holiday being yesterday, and I’m enjoying this small victory before my bracket becomes busted like a high schooler caught drinking for the first time. And that’s the last stupid analogy I’ll use because you’re here to read what’s going on in OPRF and Forest Park this weekend, not for my enchanting humor. If I can have one more- it feels like we have more events going on this weekend than a Vegas hotel during convention season. Read on to discover the who/what/when/where. I’m sure you’ll find something you like.
March Madness at Lake Street Kitchen + Bar
Even if you aren’t happy with your picks from day one, it’s still early in the tournament and no one should be out of the running for winning their pool just yet. If you’re looking for a place to watch the games, we suggest Lake Street Kitchen + Bar. Management has set up additional televisions and they have the following deals this weekend: $3 off sangria carafes on Friday and Saturday and $3.50 on select Boulevard pints. You can also enjoy half off appetizers from 2-5 p.m. on Friday if you’re watching the afternoon and early evening games. Lake Street Kitchen + Bar is located at 1101 Lake St., Oak Park.
2nd Annual OPRF Summer Camp Expo
Learn about all the fun youth day programs available this summer from a variety of local organizations including Steve & Kate’s Camp, School of Rock, River Forest Public Library, Code Play Learn, Park District of Oak Park, Giving Artfully, Alcuin Montessori, YMCA, Camp Shalom and so many more. This event is taking place Saturday from 2-4:30 p.m. at the Oak Park Public Library (OPPL), Main Library, Veteran’s Room. OPPL is located at 834 Lake St., Oak Park.
Trinity Academy of Irish Dance Performance at Oak Park Public Library
Enjoy one last sample of St. Patrick’s Day by watching the Trinity Irish dancers perform at OPPL on Friday at 11:45 a.m. Trinity has been voted “Best Dance Program For Kids” by CBS Chicago and “Best Dance Program” by Milwaukee’s Shepherd Express.
“I Found Myself Lost” at OPRF Little Theatre
“I Found Myself Lost” is an original play written, directed and performed by students in Oak Park-River Forest High School’s drama program. The central theme is coming of age and dealing with life’s transitions. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. The OPRFHS Little Theatre is located at 201 N. Scoville Ave., Oak Park.
Downtown Oak Park is home to several small business owners that depend on support from the community. With nice weather promised throughout the weekend, it might be nice to take the family (or a date, a friend, yourself) to stop in a few local shops. Think of it as an opportunity to meet new neighbors and help the local economy. For more information, read the conversation we had with resident Blagica Bottigliero: #ShopSmallOakPark
Gallery PINK’s “Material Obsession” exhibit
New work by artists Gina Lee Robbins, Bobbi Meier, and Linda Abrams will be featuring their work at Gallery PINK, 149 Harrison St., Oak Park. Stop by over the weekend to see original, authentic work from talented artists. Hours are Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Call 708-524-2231 for more information.
Saturday Fun Run
There will be two “Best Foot Forward” Saturday morning fun runs: 6 miles at 7:30 a.m., or 3 miles at 8 a.m. The group will meet at Panera Bread, 7349 Lake St in River Forest. These fun runs are open to runners of all ages, experience, and ability level.
