This Weekend Around Oak Park

Last night, District 97 announced that they would be shutting down the schools today. So all the kids in OPRF woke up this morning to say those two magical words for the first time this winter, “SNOW DAY!”

As a kid, I remember checking the news ticker scrolling across the bottom of the television while eating cereal. Hoping, praying that I wouldn’t have to go in on days like these. If I caught wind the night before that a huge winter storm was on the way, you bet I rolled the dice with my homework by not doing it. Sometimes I won, other times I would have to finish it in between classes. Either way, I enjoyed the thrill.

Nostalgia aside, we have a great weekend to enjoy the snow! Some events have been canceled but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a great time by keeping it local and fun.

Rock the House Fundraiser
School of Rock Oak Park is hosting its annual fundraiser for the Oak Park Regional Housing Center on Saturday from 7-10 p.m. Hear music by Fernando Jones, the School of Rock OP Team, and enjoy cocktails and small bites. There will be plenty of craft beers from accomplished home brewers and culinary delights from local chefs. Tickets are $60. School of Rock is located at 219 Lake Street.

Foodie Fest
Saturday is the last day to take advantage of Foodie Fest 2018. Modeled after various “restaurant week” promotions that take place throughout the country, Foodie Fest features prix fixe menus, each with three items or courses. These meals are priced at $10, $20 or $30 depending on the restaurant. For a list of participating businesses, visit the OPRF Chamber of Commerce website. Visit or call any one of these restaurants to get a better idea of what they are offering on special as a part of Foodie Fest.

Ice Skating at Ridgeland

Go Sledding!
When’s the last time you played in the snow? Seriously, why not let out your inner child by heading to Barrie Park and going down that wicked hill? Barrie Park is located at 1011 S. Lombard Ave., Oak Park. All you need is warm clothes, boots, and friends. It costs nothing to enjoy all this fresh powder.
