A few years ago I got into podcasts. And I REALLY got into them. From podcasts covering the newest discoveries in technology and science to business, to reality show recaps, I’m always looking for new and interesting recommendations. I listen to them while commuting. While cleaning. While drying my hair (it take FOREVER). So when I heard that there was a new podcast all about Oak Park, I knew we had to find out more.
Read on to meet the host of this new podcast – Matt Murray. We talk to him about how this idea came to fruition, what the podcast is all about, what inspires him and more. Get to know Matt and then go listen to his podcast, the only one we know of made just for Oak Park!
Around Oak Park
You recently started a new, Oak Park- centric project. Tell us about it!
Matt
I’m the host of Oak Park Podcast, a new online radio program set here in the village. It’s a place to hear more about our community, businesses and personalities. I’ve worked in media for about 15 years and felt there was a real opportunity to explore this particular format at the local level. Plus, there also are a lot of great stories in Oak Park to tell. It’s early in the project, but we’ve gotten some really great feedback.

We’re assuming that the host of Oak Park Podcast probably lives in Oak Park! How long have you lived here and what was your inspiration for starting the podcast?
Matt
Yes, my family moved to Oak Park in 2013. We liked the inclusive, vibrant and progressive community; the old homes; good schools; and the proximity to downtown.
The idea (for the podcast) was the result of a recent 15-hour road trip. The concept was to create compelling, well-edited segments that may be of interest to busy local families. The episodes will never be longer than 20-25 minutes, or roughly the amount of time it takes to take the Green Line downtown, take a lap around the grocery store or mow an Oak Park yard.

If you had to explain the ‘mission’ of Oak Park podcast in two minutes how would you summarize it?
Matt
To create an ongoing conversation that informs, entertains and, hopefully, adds to this wonderful community of ours.
AOP
How did you get into podcasting?
Matt
Podcasting is breathing new life into a 100-year-old format, radio, an industry I’ve been around my whole life. My dad worked at an FM station when I was a kid, I was involved in college radio and did it a bit as a graduate student. Oak Park Podcast is a natural progression. It’s telling stories in a format that are most accessible to the audience, in this case, busy parents who have very little time.
AOP
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Matt
My first boss out of college used to say, “It never pays to be cheap.” He’s right, whether it’s about buying a refrigerator or making a business decision.
AOP
What is the weirdest thing you have experienced in your career?
Matt
I worked in Washington, D.C., for about 10 years, first as a political reporter and then in public affairs. A great experience, but weird doesn’t begin to describe it.
AOP
What do you enjoy doing when not podcasting? Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Matt
I love spending time with my wife, Maureen, and my daughter, Aoife. inspire me each day to wake up and put my best foot forward. I’m not always successful, but I do bat for average. I also like playing the guitar, hockey and hanging out with friends and family.
AOP
How do you stay organized? Any tips?
Matt
iPhone, a parent’s best friend.
AOP
And finally, what is your favorite season?
Matt
Summer in Chicago is hard to beat.
