Major improvements and changes have been slated to take place on Madison Street this year. Oak Park residents have the opportunity to learn more about the project on Thursday, February 21 at Percy Julian Middle School. Madison Street from Harlem Avenue to Austin Boulevard is the section that will be undergoing a road diet in the upcoming months.
Representatives from the Village of Oak Park along with the engineering firm in charge of the planning will be in attendance. The public open house will offer residents the chance to ask questions as well as view the project map and design renderings for the project. While the planned work is extensive, the current expectation is that Madison Street will remain open during the construction. Safe walking routes will be maintained during the project.
The proposal for the road diet passed with a 4-3 vote in November by the Board of Trustees. While most agree that updates to the street are needed, the issue of narrowing the road has been a divisive one in the community. The effects of the road diet and related construction will not fully be known until the project has been completed.
