Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear Old Time Radio Recreations Troupe will perform a free radio reenactment show titled “Don’t Answer the Phone” at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 10 at the Oak Park Arms retirement community, 408 S. Oak Park Ave.
Two 1940’s radio performances featuring live sound effects will be acted out- “Four Hours to Kill,” originally presented in 1949 by the Phillip Morris Playhouse and “Sorry, Wrong Number,” originally presented in 1943 by Suspense.
The free radio recreation shows are very popular with Oak Park Arms’ residents, who sometimes have their own children and grandchildren attend, as well as other residents from the Oak Park community.
Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear troupe features actors and voice over artists who share a common interest of performing old time radio programs for the community and donating their time and talent to do so.
Group founders and married couple Ben Dooley and Pam Turlow have had their troupe performing the radio recreation shows at the Oak Park Arms since 2002. Dooley and Turlow’s group performs only once every two months due to the considerable challenges involved in creating a show.
Prior to performing a show, the couple browses through thousands of old time radio episodes. They then select a favorite episode, listen and type out the transcribed script, try out live sound effects, and rehearse the entire show until its ready to be performed for the public.
