Recycle electronics Saturday
Oak Park residents can recycle electronics from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday by dropping them off at the Public Works Center, 201 South Blvd. Acceptable items include computers, peripherals, laptops, monitors, TVs, cell phones, rechargeable batteries, printers, fax machines, MP3 players, portable digital assistants, video game consoles, video cassette recorders/players, digital video disk players, zip drives, scanners and microwaves. Unlike in past years, the Village now incurs costs to sponsor these events, as state collection goals have been met and funding has declined for electronic processors. This means staff may check for identification to ensure residents are served first. For more information call 708-358-5700 or email publicworks@oak-park.us.

Time running out to take outdoor sculpture walk
Oak Park’s fourth annual public art exhibit is scheduled to end Monday, Sept. 7. This year’s art is displayed along a walkable five-block stretch of Chicago Avenue between Ridgeland Avenue and Austin Boulevard. The 12 pieces of public art included in this year’s exhibit were selected through a juried competition and are by established sculptors and emerging newcomers. A brochure for a self-guided walking tour is available at www.oak-park.us/sculpturewalk as well as at local libraries, area businesses along the route and the Oak Park Visitors’ Center, 1010 Lake St. For more information, email sculpturewalk@oak-park.us.

Tours of local Post Office highlight customer appreciation day
The Oak Park Post Office will host a customer appreciation day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, featuring tours of the historic building at 901 Lake St. and a special pictorial postmark celebrating the facility’s 80th anniversary. In addition to tours, the event also will include refreshments and giveaways. For more information, call 708.848.7901.

Composting program offered
Oak Parkers who would rather compost food scraps than send them to a landfill are invited to participate in the Village’s organics collection program. The cost is $14 per month, which is about the same as recycling one bag of yard waste per week under the current Village yard waste program that does not accept food scraps. Neighbors can share carts and costs. Click here for more information – or email compostable@oak-park.us.
