This Weekend Around Oak Park

Have you ever seen “I Love You Man,” the bromantic comedy starring Paul Rudd and Jason Segel? There are so many quotable lines in that film but none more appropriate this time of year than “It’s beach season! Engage your core!” spouted by Andy Samberg, who plays a personal trainer.

Summer is on our front doorstep and it’s time to dress appropriately. This is the bittersweet point in the calendar when we are excited about the weather, but might be self-conscious about baring it all. For the record, we think you’re beautiful just the way you are. But there are plenty of things you can do to get the blood pumping. Off the top of my head I can think of doing squats while you brush your teeth, arm wrestling your friends or getting into parkour if you don’t have any friends (or a toothbrush), but I digress.

We’ve compiled a list, as we do every week, of things going on in the OPRF area this weekend. A couple of our suggestions go along with the physical fitness theme. At the same time, working out all weekend sounds kind of insane so we’ve included milder activities as well. Whatever you end up doing, enjoy yourself and don’t forget to tell your Mom that you love her.

Grand Opening of The Barre Code
The Barre Code is a group workout facility that will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday. There will be two free community classes at 10 a.m. and noon. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend the Open House or register for one of the free classes online here. The Barre Code is located at 1040 Lake St. in Oak Park.

Oak Park Runners Club Saturday Fun Run
The club plans on meeting at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Home & Madison. They plan on going for a 9.5 mile run at various paces. Can somebody explain to me how 7:30 a.m. and 9.5 miles is fun? Just kidding, runner jockeys.

Mother’s Day Restaurant Suggestions
This Sunday is the one day out of the year when it’s all about Mom. We recommend the following restaurants to treat the ones who brought us into the world, but for the love of Pete go wherever she wants to. Our ideas:

Hemingway’s Bistro (211 N Oak Park Ave.) – French bistro with an extensive wine list and brunch buffet.

Trattoria 225 (225 Harrison St.) – Italian Restaurant serving wood-fired pizza, salads and house-made pasta.

Maya Del Sol (144 S Oak Park Ave.) – Latin fusion cuisine.

Winberie’s Restaurant & Bar (151 N Oak Park Ave.) – Casual café serving American cuisine.

Cucina Paradiso (814 North Blvd.) – Contemporary spot for small & large plates. Great thin crust pizza.

Barclay’s American Grill (1120 Pleasant St.) – Laid-back kitchen and sports bar with contemporary décor on the walls.

Oak Park School of Rock performs David Bowie & The Who at Wire
The jams continue this weekend with cover songs of David Bowie and The Who. Performances take place on Saturday and Sunday at noon. The show is open to all ages and tickets are $12 at the door. The Wire is located at 6815 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Berwyn.

Mother’s Day gift-making workshop at Bead in Hand
Bead in Hand will host a gift-making workshop on Friday and Saturday between 1-5 p.m. No reservation necessary. The cost is $5 per item which includes supplies and instruction. All ages are welcome to take part in the crafts, but smaller children may need assistance. Bead in Hand is located at 145 W. Harrison St.
