This Weekend Around Oak Park

Just when you thought the spirit of Halloween and the chilling feelings associated with the holiday were over, we have stumbled upon the third Friday the 13th of 2015. The day is unlucky enough as it is, but three in one year? For the sake of education, I reviewed one of those paranormal blogs to see what they had to say on the subject. Apparently we had three in one year as recently as 2012, so no big deal. However, the time it took to complete the trilogy of Friday the 13th’s in 2015 took exactly 39 weeks (or 3 x 13 weeks). Cue ghostly music and the OoOoO’s.

Seriously, who has the time to think of things like that? And more importantly, who cares? If you suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia (irrational fear of Friday the 13th), I recommend avoiding any black cats, ladders, mirrors, etc. If superstitious dates mean nothing to you, check out the following activities taking place in the community over the weekend.

Petite Boutique Holiday Market at Pleasant Home
Looking to get a head start on this year’s shopping list? The Petite Boutique Holiday Market is free and might be a great place to visit over the weekend. Unique vendors will be selling handcrafted gifts and gourmet foods. The market is open Friday from 3-9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Pleasant Home is located 217 Home Ave., Oak Park.

Reception for the Inaugural Artist Member Juried Exhibition
The Oak Park Art League is hosting a reception for the Inaugural Artist Member Juried Exhibition on Friday from 7-9 p.m. Exhibition Judge Caroline Older said, “In selecting works for this exhibition, I looked for artists that push the boundaries of producing and presenting art; artists who are experimenting with materials and technologies, whether traditional or new; and artists whose work appears to convey a message.  Works that encourage me to interact with the artist and ask questions about the concept behind the piece are of particular interest.” The Oak Park Art League is located at 702 Chicago Ave., Oak Park.

Gallery PINK Holiday Show
The studio is now featuring its holiday work. Stop by the gallery to view a variety of drawings, cut paper, ceramics, sculpture, collage and painting- for gift giving. Gallery PINK is located at 149 Harrison St., Oak Park.

Oak Park Women’s Guild (OPWG) Casino Night
The OPWG will host their lively casino night and fundraiser, themed “Totally 80’s,” at The Carleton of Oak Park on Friday from 8-11 p.m. Guests will try their luck at black jack, poker, craps and wine roulette while giving back to the local community. “Stuart Little” (the musical)
The Open Door Repertory Company presents “Stuart Little” (the musical). The performance is based on E.B. White’s classic tale of an underdog mouse born into a New York family. The adaption and lyrics are written by Joseph Robinette, music by Ronna Frank, and directed by Jeff Predmore. Shows are Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15.
