This Weekend Around Oak Park

November 9-11

Photo Compliments of Don Harder

A lot of heavy tragedy happening in the nation this week. I went to bed last night thinking about Thousand Oaks, CA, a community similar to Oak Park. I thought about how many times I’ve gone out for drinks as a college student or even gone to an evening yoga class just like Nancy Van Vessem and Maura Binkley of Tallahassee, FL.

As we shift gears into shorter days with longer and chilly nights we must remind ourselves to love, care and speak up when we see someone struggling. Tempting as it is to retreat into a blanket on the couch each night (guilty!), we must remember that life is a gift and what makes the human experience so vibrant is the warmth of friends and family. Mental illness and suffering is rampant and taboo in this sugary Instagram wonderland in which we all live. With so much pressure to be perfect and perform to expectation, some individuals pay the ultimate price.

Put your phone down tonight. Hug your friends. Hug your family tonight when you get home from work and tell them you love them.
