Village named state’s first municipal arboretum

Decades of commitment to nurturing, diversifying and protecting its urban forest has earned Oak Park recognition as Illinois’ first – and the nation’s fourth – municipal arboretum. A celebration is set for noon, April 24 in Scoville Park, where saplings grown from acorns of some of the Village’s oldest oak trees will be planted. Click here for more details…

Document shredding event is Saturday

Help prevent identity theft by shredding documents containing personal information at a free recycling event scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon, Sat., April 18, at the Public Works Center, 201 South Blvd. Each household is limited to two bags or small boxes. Only items with personal information such as canceled checks, documents containing credit card numbers, social security numbers and medical information will be accepted. Paper materials that can be placed in the recycling cart or bin, such as newspaper, magazines, chipboard or junk mail, will not be accepted. for details.

Recycle old clothing Saturday

The Public Works Department has partnered with the Epilepsy Foundation to collect clothing and apparel of all types and in any condition from 9 a.m. to noon, Sat., April 18, at the Public Works Center, 201 South Blvd. Items, including shoes, belts, hats, bags, linens and towels, will be sent to developing nations to repurpose. The Epilepsy Foundation also offers residential pickup – visit for more information.

Free community health fair is Sunday

Area residents are invited to meet representatives of the community’s health and wellness businesses at a free health fair set for noon to 4 p.m., Sun., April 19 in the Ridgeland Common Recreation Complex, 415 Lake St. The Oak Park-River Forest Chamber of Commerce event will feature more than 50 exhibitors, 14 speakers, health screenings and giveaways. The Park District also will offer free exercise classes and U.S. Olympian Emery Lehman will be on hand to sign autographs. More information is posted at
